Debra’s Delicious Juice

When I started writing about recipes I created in my Ninja Blender, I really had no idea what was in store for this blog’s future. The recipe posts for Ninja items have sort of taken on a life of their own, but no more so than the How to Juice with your Ninja Blender post.

The irony of it all is that I am not really a huge juicer. I make orange juice or apple juice from time-to-time when I need them for a recipe. 2Chili is the juice drinker in our family, and he is very particular about his juice – it pretty much has to come from a carton and be spiked with sugar.

However, readers occasionally post their juice recipes in the comments section of that juicing post for others to try. Since there are so many comments on the post, I think they can sometimes get lost in the shuffle. When Debra posted a recipe in the comments a while back, I asked her permission to post it as a “real” post so that everyone could reference it without having to read through all the comments. And, so, today I bring you that juice!

This really is a drink of amazingness – the nutritional profile is fantastic. This would be a meal replacement juice as it yields A LOT of juice (64 ounces) and has a little more than 300 calories. It also has more than half your daily RDA of fiber. If you are not crazy about the taste of celery, I recommend leaving that out, as it definitely is noticeable in this juice.

A lot of folks have commented that they do not like to strain their juice, and, with this recipe, you don’t have to strain. You’ll have a thick consistency – but very drinkable – power juice!

You are correct about this having the possibility of being a meal replacement. I bring it to to work take the place of lunch, mid morning and afternoon snack.

Debra’s Delicious Juice

Serves: 1

Time Required: 10 minutes or less

Ingredients:

  • 1 grapefruit, peel and pith removed
  • 1 green apple, chopped, peel on (I used a red apple because I didn’t have any green apples)
  • 1 small piece of ginger, peeled
  • 1/2 English cucumber, chopped
  • 4 stalks of celery hearts
  • 1 cup carrots, chopped
  • 3 handfuls of spinach
  • 16-18 oz water

Updated December 2012: If you add 4-5 ice cubes and blend until smooth, you will get a less “pulpy” mixture!

Method:

  • Add all the ingredients to your Ninja Blender and blend until you reach a smooth consistency
  • There is no need to strain this juice, but if you don’t like pulp, you can strain with a mesh sieve

Nutrition:

For unstrained juice.

  • Hey Angela!

So, I tried this recipe today in my ninja…. and I am really sad to say it was a disaster! ? I followed the instructions and blended to what I thought was a “smooth consistency”…. but in reality… it turned out really grainy… not exactly thick or watery… but really grainy. When I attempted to “drink” the juice… I really just ended up chewing it in my mouth. What did I do wrong? Should I have added more water do you think? Or maybe I just didn’t blend it long enough?

    Appreciate your advice.

    Aloha,
    Jen

    • Hi Jennifer,

I don’t think you did anything wrong. My experience making this juice is that it was fairly “pulpy.” One idea is you could strain it in a seive (or maybe half strain it) if you don’t like all the pulp. Also, someone commented the other day that they dice and freeze their fruits and veggies before “juicing” and then add ice to the mix to get a smoother consistency. The root of it is, of course, that the Ninja is not a juice extractor, but rather just a high-powered blender, and it can only get everything chopped up so fine.

I’m sorry it didn’t work out so well for you!

    • Jennifer,

If the texture is not appealing to you try juicing the blended moisture to remove all the extra Pulp. I have found this helpful in the past

      • We just purchased a Ninja Today. We blended our normal items including nuts and frozen fruits. It was a little more chunky than our last machine, but when we blended it in the cups it was a lot more smooth. We also tried blending a little longer in the bigger machine after. Both became very smooth.

  • When I watched the infomercial and they were making a veggie drink, they did add ice. I think that is the key here. The ice provides the liquid plus it is frozen, and then the veggie drink turns out to be more of what one is looking for. It is not a thin juice but more a thicker but still drinkable drink. I just ordered my Ninja 1200 limited edition, and can’t wait for it to arrive. I am so excited.

    • I see where the poster above me did say to add ice, so sorry for the redundant post.

  • I think the drink is not meant to be too smooth. In order for you to stay full you have to have fiber. This drink if packed with fiber. I enjoyed it very much and It eliminated my craving for junk food. instead a class of water was all i needed. This will be one of my go to drinks.

  • Hi I have a Samson Masticator Juicer.. And it takes me so long to cut up the vegies to juice, because they have to be small pieces… Usuallly quite a mission, and it puts me off, as I dont aways have 30 mins.
But with my Ninja in the kitchen it takes 5mins… So so great.. And easy to clean.

    • Hi Eve,

That is interesting to hear from someone who has a juicer. Thanks for your note!

  • 3 grams of fat? I don’t see any ingredients that have any fat in them. What contributes the fat?

    • Hi Kristina,

Fruits and vegetables have small amounts of fat in them. The calorie calculator I use to calculate the nutritional info will count even 1/10th of a gram, whereas manufacturers aren’t required to count anything under .5 a gram as having fat. Something can have .49 grams and be labelled “no fat.” This fat is from healthy fruit and veg sources, so I hope that won’t steer you away from trying Debra’s juice!

  • The juice is great. I make the same recipe but add Kale and use organic unsweetened apple juice as a liquid. This gives it a smoother texture and makes it a little sweeter. I add 16 oz of apple juice and three laves of Kale.

The site is great and thanks for the info. Just bought a ninja after I burned up two cheaper blenders motors in less than two months. Have made several of your recipes, keep up the great work and thanks!

  • This looks delicious! We just got back from vacation (aka – eating way too much for a week) do I need to add all this produce to my shopping list. I also just got my Ninja Mega 1500 for Mother’s Day! I was hoping to find a recipe just like this! Thanks so much!!!

  • so.. I made a juice smoothie with this recipe as base. The only thing that I personally had a problem with was the ginger (too strong for my liking) however the recipe was astounding. Could you figure out what the nutritional facts are? here goes:

1 pink grapefruit, peel and pith removed
1 small piece of ginger, grated
    1 handful of red grapes
    1 handful of green graps
    1 handful of strawberries
    1 handful of pomegranate seeds
1 loose handful of baby spinach
1 loose handful of baby kale
1 tsp of acai super fruit powder
1/8 c. gogi berres (rehydrate in 1/4 c water with the ginger added to it)

ninja everything EXCEPT the greens, save those till last. you won’t need any added water because of the fluid content of the fruit. when the fruit was smooth, I poured it into my large spare ninja canister, added the greens, poured the juice back in and then blended it to death (about 3 minutes). perfection. Please let me know what you think of this and how to get the benefit of the ginger with out it over powering the drink. I think I’m the only one that didn’t appreciate the ginger in it. thanks.

    • Hi Sassy,

Here is the basic nutrient breakdown:

      Calories: 315
      Fat: 4 g
      Cholesterol: 0
      Sodium: 90 mg
      Potassium: 1075 mg
      Carbohydrate: 69 g
      Fiber: 12 g
      Sugar: 53 g
      Protein: 7 g

If you are looking to ginger for inflammation fighting, I personally think your bases are covered above with the greens and berries, as well as super food powder. So, if you don’t like ginger, just leave it out!

      Hope that helps,
      Angela

  • I hear everyone say that the Ninja is easy to clean. In the dishwasher. I’m wondering if anyone has trouble with the blades cutting the racks in the dishwasher?

    • Hi Jim,

It is definitely easy to clean in the dishwasher, but you have to be careful with the blades, but not necessarily from cutting the rack, but to make sure you or people in your household don’t cut their hands if they just reach in. I haven’t had any issues with it cutting the rack. You can sort of turn it to put it in in a way that the sharp part of the blades don’t touch the rack, if that makes sense.
