Project: Food Budget–Week 6

This week I branched out and bought a few new-to-us items along with my normal supply of staples. Namely, I bought a container of pumpkin seed protein powder as well as a bag of Teeccino.

I read about Teeccino over at fellow Food-Budgeter blog Little Blue Hen. It seems everywhere I turn lately I have been presented with the benefits of giving up coffee. Thing is, I have never really wanted to give up coffee. I like coffee! (Okay, so, I did give it up my senior year in college but eventually moved to Seattle…and you know where that leads…)

But, I am not sure if I really need coffee, or I just prefer a hot beverage at breakfast. For over a year I drank Earl Grey breakfast tea with my breakfast, as I had a desk job where I got to work early and the coffee was very bad.

I liked tea then, so, I’m trying Teeccino for a while. So far, so good – I am mixing it half and half with coffee right now. The main benefit of Teeccino is that it is non-acidic, and of course, coffee is very acidic. Our bodies do best in an alkaline environment, and so the acid in the coffee can get things out of whack. I won’t get into all the other environmental (both to the body and our Earth) issues that people have with coffee. If you want to have your mind bent a little on this topic, read one of our Virtual Book Club books – Crazy, Sexy Diet or Skinny Bitch.

The damage was big this week: $99.59. The three biggest items were:

  • Pumpkin seed protein powder: $17.99 (50 servings)
  • Hulled hemp seed: $11.99
  • Teeccino: $7.99

Fruit: Organic apples, organic peaches, organic bananas, organic pears

Veg: Organic spinach, organic broccoli, organic delicata squash, organic green bell peppers, organic baby carrots (the carrots are mostly for the dog)

Convenience: 2 bags of chips, cracked wheat crackers, pre-made hummus, almond butter, sandwich cookies, Corn Thins, Teccino

Canned: Black beans, pinto beans, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, tomato sauce, tomato paste

  • Extremely intrigued by Teeccino! I’m not a coffee drinker (I just never liked it), but I do love my tea. Where did you buy it?

    • I really like it! I bought it at Whole Foods in the coffee aisle. In my store, it was just below the tea. It is stronger than most teas — but it smells divine. They have it in tea bags and also ground so you can brew it in a french press or coffeemaker…

      • I’m seriously gonna have to check it out!!! I’ll put it on my list for next time I go to Whole Foods. Thanks!

  • i applaud you for the coffee switchup! hope it continues to go well.

what do you do with the protein powder? is that for smoothies or do you do something else with it?

    • I am excited about the coffee switchup because we have been reading all these books that say to ditch it but I haven’t really wanted to. ?

I use the protein powder in smoothies — in fact I am working on a recipe to post soon — but also stir it into oatmeal. This is my first time using the pumkin – it is really good!

  • I love coffee. I doubt I can wholly give it up (again — I have in the past for different reasons).

I’ve never used protein powder. It may be something to talk over with my husband, though, as he’s trying to lose weight, and this would be a good way for him to boost his protein intake. Hmm. Something to think about!

    • If you have any inkling you want to cut back on the coffee, try the Teeccino. I seriously like it and I LOVE coffee.

I am currently researching and writing a protein powder comparison post — coming next week (I hope)!
