If you’ve ever done much hiking, you’ve probably heard of gorp, which is a funny way to say trail mix.
Why is it called gorp? I really don’t know! If you do, let’s hear it in the comments section.
The beautiful thing about gorp is that it’s easy to make – you really can’t mess up – and it is highly portable. You don’t need to be headed off on a day hike to take advantage of these properties.
Lately, I have kept a container in my backpack to fend off the need to visit the vending machine in the mid-afternoon. Nothing good comes out of vending machines!
Here’s what’s in my current blend:
- Dried banana chips
- Raw organic Petipas (pumpkin seeds – a good source of iron)
- Raisins
- Roasted coconut
- Raw almonds
- Candied ginger
To make it, throw equal parts of each ingredient into a container and shake!
Simple, delicious, and way better than anything that will come out of a machine, trust me. When you are peckish, just grab a handful and you’ll be glad you had it handy!
What’s your favorite trail mix combo? I’d love to know if I am overlooking some tasty ingredients…

I use walnuts and craisins in mine. We couldn’t find the ginger at Trader Joe’s the last time we went. Maybe Sprouts would be more visible. It was a crowed day when we went.
