New [To Me] Protein Powder

Ever since I wrote a post about the different types of protein powders out there, I have noticed more and more that I didn’t even know existed!

A couple weeks ago, I  needed some protein powder so I dialed up Amazon.com and did a generic search for “protein powder” and then sorted by reviews. I have been on the quest to find a powder with absolutely no sugars added, and, I stumbled on this one: Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein.

The reviews were not bad – four out of five stars – and knowing that you can’t please all of the people all of the time, I took a gamble and ordered up one container.

Amazon reviewers seemed mixed on their opinion of the taste, and, I won’t lie to you. It is “earthy.” But, not so earthy that it is impossible to consume. Its protein sources are sprouted grains and beans – so that of course explains the earthiness. The ingredients are such nutrition powerhouses that a little earthy taste is worth it to me!

So far, I have mixed it with oatmeal, fruit smoothies, and some of my cherry energy chews. It was most noticeable in the oatmeal, and gets pretty muted when combined with anything sweet like fruit. It dissolves well, and, meets my low sugar requirements:

I wanted to share this powder with you guys because I’m impressed with the quality of ingredients, and, because it is a great option for folks with GI issues with whey, soy, and other common protein powders. As an added bonus, it has live probiotics and protein-digesting enzymes. Another notable item is that one scoop has 100% Daily Value for vitamin D – something that is a benefit to Northern Climate folks like me!

I am planning to compare this powder with Vega and Sun Warrior as well in the future, so stay tuned for that!

  • My sister just gave me a container of this stuff but I have yet to use it. I currently have been using Vega One nutrition shake (not the protein powder, the whole shabam shake) and I think it’s pretty good over all. Looks like I will need to pull out this powder and start using it as well!

    • I’m curious to hear how you like it, Robin! I am planning to start trying the Vega product soon — the price tag is a bit steep but I have heard great things…

  • This is great information .. thank you for doing the research and sharing your findings.

  • I’m always trying to find new ways of eating protein powder. I can’t stand to make shakes. My boyfriend will eat the powder straight! But yeah, you’ve given me some ideas to try, like the oatmeal idea. I’ve sprinkled it on banana’s before. That tastes okay.

    • Hi Jenn,

One thing you can do too, is mix it with a small amount of coconut milk to a thick, pudding-like consistency. I also mix it into baked goods. You can sub protein powder for some of the flour (don’t go crazy, but a couple scoops works!) in things like muffins and quickbreads, and in pancakes. I even mix it into my homemade Lara bars! Oatmeal is one of the easiest places to put it…

      Good luck!
